Sodom

A hand opening the red cover of the book Sodom

“Sodom” is a book that offers a new, raw and complex interpretive reading of the biblical city’s story, from the lowest place on earth to the birth of the Messiah. The narrative unfolds throughout the book, enveloped by layers of textual and visual commentary — among them the Bible, Midrash, art, pop culture, sex, history and current events — echoing the structure of the Talmudic page. Woven through them are my conversations with a stranger on Reddit who interpreted Talmud and Midrash for me: ancient methods of commentary carried into a contemporary medium, and one of many ways the book gives traditional sources a new reading.
